VIP (Visiting in Prison) Partnership Book Launch
On 4 August Corrina from the Grundtvig Team attended the launch event for 3 new books at HMP Wolds. The books were written, illustrated and printed by offenders with the aim of easing the visiting process for children and families. They were developed as part of a Grundtvig Partnership with partners from Denmark , Finland , Germany , Portugal , Italy , Poland and the UK .
‘Mark's Book' explains about a day in the life of a prisoner and uses photos taken around the prison. ‘Danny's Diary' is a story of a boy waiting for his dad to be released on a tag and ‘Visiting Day' is a colouring book about visiting dad through the eyes of a three-year old child.
The book launch, which took place during a family day, featured presentations on the impact of the project on the organisations, prisoners and families, demonstrations of how the books were produced by the prisoners and a competition for the children. Copies of the books were distributed to all visitors.

1st Degree Unit in Prison theatre |

Approval has been given by Leeds Metropolitan University to a new Foundation Degree in Contemporary Theatre Practice offered by the Arden School of Theatre, which for the first time includes a Unit in Prison Theatre. The new two-year degree, developed by Emma Kanis, was supported by the Will to Dream project and its coordinator, Alan Clarke, was invited to be a member of the Validation Panel. The Unit - Prison theatre & Drama Education - is offered as a second year option and focuses on "the process of preparing, devising and delivering a workshop/ performance with prisoners or ex-offenders". It provides a strong basis for those wishing to work as artists with offenders or - after taking an additional postgraduate teaching qualification - as drama teachers in prisons. A number of prison theatre practitioners have already agreed to provide inputs into the Unit, including Bruce Wall from The London Shakespeare Workout and Mike Moloney from the Prison Arts Foundation, Belfast.
The validation process was detailed and vigorous but the Arden team convincingly persuaded the Panel of the validity and relevance of the new degree. Amongst other issues discussed was the possibility of developing a Foundation Degree focused wholly on prison arts, which received strong encouragement and hopefully will be developed in the near future. Our congratulations in particular to Emma for this important breakthrough in raising the status of drama in prisons.
